Dr. Hossein Sojoudi, interim chair and an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, recently received the 2024-25 Mid-American Conference Outstanding Faculty Award for Student Success.
Now in its sixth year, the Outstanding Faculty Award for Student Success recognizes one full-time faculty member from each MAC institution who demonstrates an unwavering commitment to supporting and developing students both inside and outside of the classroom.
“As interim chair of the MIME Department — the largest single-program department on UToledo’s campus — I’ve focused on creating a student-centered culture both inside and outside the classroom,” Sojoudi said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see these efforts recognized in such a short time. Supporting student success through academic guidance, career preparation and fostering a strong sense of belonging has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of this role.”
Sojoudi joined UToledo in Fall 2016 following a postdoctoral associate position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he also held a joint appointment in the Department of Chemical Engineering. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Since arriving at UToledo, Dr. Sojoudi has made a lasting impact through his excellence in teaching, dedicated mentorship, innovative research, and transformative leadership.
A recognized leader in his field, Sojoudi has received numerous accolades, including the 2023 Outstanding Teacher Award, the 2022 UToledo President’s Award for Excellence in Creative and Scholarly Activity, the 2021 Excellence in Research Award from the UToledo College of Engineering and the 2020 Excellence in Supervision of Undergraduate Research Award, also from the College of Engineering. His research has garnered widespread attention, with coverage in MIT News, UToledo News, Science New and Forbes.
Dr. Jeanne Kusina, director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, praised Sojoudi’s dedication to student success.
“Dr. Sojoudi’s passion for mentoring and supporting students is evident in every aspect of his work,” Kusina said. “He has a profound ability to inspire students and provide them with the tools to succeed in their academic and professional endeavors. His recognition as the recipient of this year’s MAC Outstanding Faculty Award for Student Success is well deserved.”
In addition to his contributions in teaching, research, student mentorship and leadership, Sojoudi serves on UToledo’s Graduate Council and is a Provost Faculty Fellow. He previously served on UToledo’s Research Council, among numerous other service roles that reflect his deep commitment to the UToledo community. He has been invited as a keynote speaker at more than 35 universities and international conferences, further demonstrating his influence and leadership in the field.
