The University of Toledo’s Brothers on the Rise is hosting a male symposium, Strength in Unity, featuring Grammy-nominated political activist and author Kevin Powell as keynote speaker, on Friday, April 19.
The student event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Doermann Theatre. Registration is free and required by Wednesday, April 17.
“The ‘Strength in Unity’ conference strives to navigate manhood and masculinities to empower tomorrow’s leaders today through exploration of identity, a defining of leadership and resilience, and a reimagining of manhood in a diverse world,” said David Young, director of Toledo Excel and Special Projects.
The Strength in Unity male symposium will include breakouts that will focus on networking, career, accountability, mental health and commonalities.
Brothers on the Rise is a faculty/staff mentorship group focusing on Black and Latino males and the sessions will target these groups, but all students are welcome to attend the event.
“I think all students could greatly benefit,” Young said. “In addition, Kevin has recently completed a documentary film exploring Black males and issues of manhood. We will be some of the first in the country to see footage.”
