Strategic Communicator Named VP of Marketing and Communications

A longtime communications leader at The University of Toledo focused on enhancing UToledo’s reputation has been promoted to lead the Office of University Marketing and Communications.

Meghan Cunningham, who joined UToledo in 2010 and most recently served as executive director of marketing and communications, will serve as vice president of marketing and communications effective Tuesday, May 2.

“Through her leadership of reputation marketing campaigns, local and national media exposure and messaging throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Meghan has distinguished herself as the University’s lead storyteller and a trusted strategic communications advisor,” UToledo President Gregory Postel said. “Her dedication to UToledo and strong collaborative style are critical to achieving our goals. I look forward to working with Meghan to continue to raise our profile.”

“I believe in the power of higher education to change lives, especially at UToledo, and it is an awesome responsibility to tell our story,” Cunningham said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to lead such a talented and creative team committed to sharing the wonderful value of a UToledo education with prospective students and celebrating the successes of our incredible students, faculty and staff.”

During her 13 years at UToledo, Cunningham also served as a media relations specialist, an assistant director of media relations and the director of University communications. Additionally, she has provided interim leadership of the full marketing and communications team several times.

Cunningham succeeds Dr. Adrienne King, who had led the Office of Marketing and Communications since 2019 and implemented the current Fueling Tomorrows brand.

Prior to joining UToledo, Cunningham was a reporter at The Blade newspaper. She also has reported for The Flint Journal and The County Press newspapers in Michigan.

A UToledo alumna, Cunningham has a master of business administration degree from the John B. and Lillian E. Neff College of Business and Innovation and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Michigan State University. She lives in Sylvania with her husband and two children.
