Lucie Morris said her value for education led her to UToledo.

“My parents are both educators, so education has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember,” Morris said. “I wanted to attend a university that challenged me and valued education as a part of the student experience. Obviously, pursuing an athletic career makes the college search a little bit different than a regular student. But the Athletic Department at Toledo has a built a tradition of excellence for its student athletes, where you don’t necessarily have to choose between athletics and academics.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS: UToledo recognizes the Class of 2025 with a series of stories featuring students receiving their degrees at spring commencement.

“That was a huge draw for me – I felt like I could be successful in the classroom and in the pool, and because of that, choosing UToledo became an easy decision for me,” she added.

Morris is a member of UToledo’s Women’s swim team and has served as the president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee for the last two years and interned with the Athletic Department.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in communication on Saturday, May 3, Morris will begin working at the NCAA in Indianapolis.

“I’ve learned a ton this semester in working behind the scenes with athletic fundraising, donors and event planning,” she said. “I’m super passionate about people and storytelling, and I’m excited to begin this new career with the NCAA.”

Traci Snyder, director of student-athlete development, said knowing Morris has been a pleasure.

“Lucie is a very bright, motivated and hardworking young woman who has persevered through her athletic career and been an amazing leader in this community during her time as a Rocket,” Snyder said. “She is always up for a challenge and truly leads by example. She is ready and willing to learn and grow personally and professionally wherever she can. In addition, she encourages others to be the best version of themselves every day with her energetic personality.

Lucie Morris, who graduates Saturday with a bachelor’s degree in communication, was a member of the women’s swim team and served as president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

“I know the path ahead for her is limitless and I am proud to have been a part of her journey.”

Morris said being a successful student-athlete while balancing her studies was alternately her most difficult and most rewarding accomplishment as a Rocket.

“If I’ve learned anything, it’s that you have to be willing to buy into what other people are doing. Work hard in your classes, study well but most importantly — keep chasing,” she said. “You have to be able to run down opportunities, even if you aren’t sure where they will lead.

“Embracing every aspect of your journey as a student is important, and it made sound cliché, but your time here really is what you make of it.”
