The University of Toledo Board of Trustees has announced plans to appoint Matt Schroeder, executive vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer, to serve as interim president.
The announcement comes after Dr. Gregory Postel accepted the position of Senior Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. Postel became UToledo’s 18th president on March 2, 2021, after serving as interim president since July 6, 2020.
Trustees approved a resolution to name the interim president during a special meeting on Monday. While contract negotiations are ongoing, the intent is for Schroeder to begin serving as interim president on Monday, May 20 following Dr. Postel’s last official duty as president to preside over the final spring 2024 commencement ceremony for the College of Medicine and Life Sciences on Friday, May 17, and the conclusion of his presidency on Sunday, May 19.
“We are fortunate to have a strong leader in Matt Schroeder who has spent his career serving The University of Toledo with knowledge and experience across our academic, clinical and fundraising operations,” said Will Lucas, chair of the UToledo Board of Trustees. “I again want to thank Dr. Postel for his leadership and for leaving the university better than he found it. Matt is the right person to continue building on that strong foundation and accelerate UToledo’s positive direction toward an even brighter future.”
“I am honored the Trustees have placed their confidence in me to lead UToledo during a time of great opportunity for this University as we rise to the current challenges facing higher education and healthcare while setting ourselves apart as a leader,” Schroeder said. “I understand the importance of UToledo to our students, to our patients, to our faculty, to our staff, and to the greater Toledo community. We are committed to not just maintaining but enhancing our status as an excellent public research university and academic medical center.”
Schroeder has served as executive vice president since January 2019 overseeing the finance, budget, facilities, auxiliaries, information technology, human resources, public safety and compliance functions of the University. Before that Schroeder served for four years as the chief of staff to former UToledo President Sharon L. Gaber leading strategic University priorities.
Prior to joining UToledo’s senior leadership team, Schroeder served The University of Toledo Foundation as chief operating officer and vice president of real estate and business development.
A UToledo alumnus, Schroeder received a bachelor’s degree in management from the John B. and Lillian E. Neff College of Business and Innovation. He has a master of business administration from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. Schroeder also completed the Harvard Graduate School of Education Institute for Educational Management program.
