Employees at The University of Toledo considering weight loss surgery can now choose to have the life-changing procedure performed at The University of Toledo Medical Center for a special, discounted rate.

Bariatric surgery is designed for people who weigh 100 pounds or more over their ideal body weight, or who have a body mass index of 35 or more and are at risk for serious health problems.

The vertical sleeve gastrectomy procedure is performed by Dr. Arun Baskara, a board-certified general surgeon with fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery. Baskara began performing bariatric surgery at UTMC in 2017.

The special rate for University employees is $5,500. In addition to the procedure itself, the $5,500 fee rate includes standard pre-operative labs, consultation with Baskara and planned post-operative recovery in the hospital, which is typically one day.

The fee also includes post-operative visits with the surgeon for 90 days following the procedure.

Currently, the procedure is not covered by the University’s health insurance plans, but employees can apply funds from health savings and flexible spending accounts for costs not covered by insurance. No referral is required.

Employees who are interested in learning more about bariatric surgery at UTMC are invited to attend a free information session. The next program will be 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 12, at the Comprehensive Care Center at 3333 Glendale Ave. in Toledo.
