Women & Philanthropy at The University of Toledo is celebrating 20 years of collective giving, leadership and support for innovative programs that benefit students, faculty and the broader Toledo community.

The milestone was recognized during a private event on May 7, with special recognition for Marianne Ballas, one of the founding members of the organization. Ballas received mementos from projects the group has funded over the years, including a signed rowing blade from UToledo’s inaugural women’s rowing team and a custom hand and body lotion created by the Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design program.

Established in 2005, Women & Philanthropy brings together alumni, donors and community leaders who invest in projects that advance the mission of UToledo. Since its founding, the organization has awarded more than $775,000 in grants supporting initiatives across the University.

“For 20 years, Women & Philanthropy members have demonstrated the power of collective giving,” said William Pierce ’99, ’09, associate vice president for alumni engagement and annual giving. “Their generosity has created opportunities for students, strengthened our academic and research programs, and helped move innovative ideas forward at UToledo.”

Since awarding its first grants in 2008, Women & Philanthropy has supported nearly 30 projects across the University. Funded initiatives have included enhancements to learning environments, investments in scientific research, community outreach programs and student-focused experiences.

Projects supported through Women & Philanthropy include:

•  A cosmetic science formulation and testing laboratory

•  A germ-free biomedical research facility

•  A research vessel for the UToledo Lake Erie Center

•  Arts and technology studio spaces

•  Literacy and educational outreach initiatives serving the community

Members annually combine their contributions to fund projects selected through a collaborative voting process. The organization’s model of collective philanthropy allows members to directly support programs that make a lasting impact across campus and throughout the region.

In addition to grantmaking, Women & Philanthropy has created opportunities for networking, mentorship and leadership development among women connected to the University and northwest Ohio.

“As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we also recognize the members whose vision and dedication continue to shape the future of UToledo,” said Carol Thomas ’94, chair of Women & Philanthropy and an Alumni Association board member. “Their support will have a lasting impact for generations of students and our community.”

Women & Philanthropy continues to welcome new members interested in supporting innovative initiatives at UToledo. More information is available through the Women & Philanthropy webpage.
