The University of Toledo Police responded to a car crash that resulted in a gas leak near Savage Arena on Sunday, working quickly and collaboratively to ensure that a high school graduation ceremony scheduled to take place inside the arena could begin on time.
A driver traveling northbound on Douglas Road lost control of their vehicle around 11 a.m., ultimately coming to a stop atop the gas regulator station near Savage Arena. UToledo Police worked with campus facilities personnel to immediately evacuate the arena, where Bedford Public Schools was preparing for a graduation ceremony at 2 p.m., while Toledo Fire and Rescue extricated the driver and transported her to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

Columbia Gas quickly contained the leak, and a local towing company arrived with the equipment needed to remove the vehicle, allowing for the graduation ceremony to begin as scheduled.
“The safety of our campus community is paramount,” said Rodney Theis, associate vice president of public safety and chief of police. “We’re grateful that we were able to resolve this dangerous situation quickly and carefully thanks to the assistance of Toledo Fire and Rescue and Columbia Gas.”
The Main Campus boiler remains out of service as of Tuesday, due to the interruption to natural gas service. UToledo Facilities maintenance is working to restore the boiler plant and hot water to buildings across campus as quickly as possible.
