Sixty-two Jesup Scott Honors College students representing six degree-granting colleges and 23 majors earned their Honors medallions at the Spring Medallion Ceremony near the end of spring semester.
In addition to providing an opportunity for the students to share their favorite JSHC memories and details about their Honors theses and capstone projects, the event celebrated the post-baccalaureate plans of these inspiring graduates. Following commencement, a number of these Honors students secured positions as nurses, engineers and other healthcare professionals. Many others will advance their educations to earn graduate degrees at UToledo and other universities across the nation in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and the fields of engineering, law, education and medicine.
Lucas County Common Pleas Court Judge Ian English, a 1997 graduate of the UToledo Honors Program, delivered the keynote remarks.
“These students come from academic majors across campus but are united in their inspiring drive to excel personally and as aspiring professionals,” said Dr. Heidi Appel, dean of the Jesup Scott Honors College and professor of environmental sciences. “We were proud to have Judge English join us this year to celebrate their exceptional accomplishments.”
“You are the best and brightest this university can produce,” English said. “And so, to say to you the sky is the limit would be a lie. You have no limits; but you will have challenges.”
Recounting the bravery of Admiral David Farragut during his Civil War naval siege of Mobile Bay, English concluded with advice that has served him well through his own inspiring journey on and around UToledo’s campus to success in the halls of justice: “When someone puts barriers in front of you … full speed ahead.”
