Four University of Toledo faculty members have successfully completed the Mid-American Conference Academic Leadership Development Program (ALDP). The program is designed to identify, develop, prepare and advance academic leaders from across the 12 MAC institutions.

Margaret Hoogland, an associate professor and clinical medical librarian in University Libraries.

Dr. Jyl Matson, an associate professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology.

Dr. Hossein Sojoudi, a professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering.

Dan Hernandez, a professor in the Department of Art.

The MAC ALDP brings together faculty leaders from institutions across the Mid-American Conference for workshops, discussions and collaborative learning experiences centered on leadership in higher education. Participants engage with university administrators and peers throughout the academic year while exploring current issues facing universities.

As part of the program, the UToledo cohort completed a collaborative project examining how The University of Toledo attained and continues to sustain its Carnegie R1 research designation. Their work explored the institutional culture, infrastructure and long-term commitments necessary to support high levels of research activity and doctoral education.

“The strength of this year’s cohort came not only from their individual accomplishments, but from the wide range of perspectives they brought to conversations about leadership, institutional growth and the future of research universities,” said Dr. Jeanne Kusina, UToledo’s institutional liaison to the MAC ALDP. “Their project reflected both a strong understanding of UToledo’s research mission and a thoughtful consideration of what it takes to sustain excellence over time.”

UToledo joined the MAC ALDP in 2017 and continues to support faculty participation in the program as part of its broader commitment to academic leadership development and cross-institutional collaboration.
