Montoya was one of four student-athletes recognized from the Mid-American Conference and 120 overall first-year players representing NCAA Division I universities.

The 2015 MAC Freshman of the Year was joined by Bowling Green right-handed pitcher Zac Carey, Central Michigan right-handed pitcher Sean Martens, Central Michigan shortstop Zach McKinstry, and Central Michigan designated hitter Daniel Jipping.

This past spring, Montoya became only the second Rocket to earn MAC Freshman of the Year recognition, topping all league rookies and ranking second in the conference in total bases (117) and doubles (17), fourth in home runs (9), seventh in slugging percentage (.502), tied for seventh in hits (71), and tied for 10th in RBI (39).

In addition to leading the Rockets in the six aforementioned categories, Montoya paced the team in multi-hit contests (21) and multi-RBI games (11), and was tied for first in runs scored (36) and second in batting average (.305), base-on-balls (21) and on-base percentage (.363).

Montoya’s 17 doubles also tied for fifth-most in school history in a single season.
