New University of Toledo President James Holloway was welcomed by Rocky and Rocksy on Tuesday morning as part of his first official day as a Rocket. The UToledo Board of Trustees named Holloway the University’s 19th president in May following an extensive national search.

Holloway joins UToledo from the University of New Mexico, where he had served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs since 2019. Prior to that, he spent two decades at the University of Michigan, serving as vice provost for global engagement and interdisciplinary academic affairs and associate dean of undergraduate education for the College of Engineering, among other roles.
A nuclear engineer, Holloway’s career has been a mix of research, teaching, administration and global work, including in India, Ethiopia and Ghana. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nuclear engineering from the University of Illinois, completed advanced graduate work in mathematics at Cambridge University and earned a doctorate in engineering physics from the University of Virginia.
