The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences will welcome a new class of medical students with a white coat ceremony on Friday, July 28.
The event begins at 10 a.m. in Nitschke Hall. Tickets are required.
Established in the early 1990s, white coat ceremonies have been widely embraced as a rite of passage for incoming medical students across the country.
“The white coat is one of the most recognizable symbols of our profession,” said Dr. Christopher Cooper, dean of the College of Medicine and Life Sciences. “These students have worked so hard to get where they are. Today we celebrate their entry into medical school and their commitment to serving all people with the highest level of expert care, dignity, respect and professionalism.”
In addition to the presentation of a white coat, the event will include a welcome from Cooper and a recitation of the Medical Student Pledge of Ethics.
UToledo received more than 5,500 medical school applications this year, ultimately selecting 175 students.
The class is majority female, with an average GPA of 3.75. Students come from 21 different states. Sixty-four percent of students are from Ohio, with 26% coming from northwest Ohio.
Of the 175 students, 29 received their undergraduate degree from UToledo.
A livestream of the event is available on the College of Medicine and Life Sciences white coat ceremony website.
