The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences officially welcomed its M.D. Class of 2030 on Friday during the annual White Coat Ceremony, marking the beginning of the students’ medical education and their commitment to the profession.
Held during orientation week, the event celebrates students’ transition into medical education as they receive their first white coats and recite the Medical Student Pledge of Ethics, symbolizing their commitment to a career in healthcare.

“The white coat is more than a symbol; it is a pledge. A pledge to lead with compassion, to listen before you act, and to place the patient at the center of everything you do,” said Dr. Imran Ali, dean of the UToledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. “As these students step into the clinical world for the first time, they carry with them the full support of this institution; our faculty, our mentors, and a community that believes in who they are becoming.”
The incoming class of 175 medical students represents the 58th entering class in the College of Medicine and Life Sciences. Members of the Class of 2030 come from 19 states and earned undergraduate degrees at institutions ranging from Case Western Reserve University and Dartmouth College to Vanderbilt University. More than 60% of the class are Ohio residents, including approximately 22% from northwest Ohio.
Madeleine Finton, from Columbia Station, Ohio, earned her undergraduate degree at Boston University. She said Friday’s white coat ceremony is the culmination of years of teamwork.
“My mom was a single parent through medical school; she helped raise me and get me here,” Finton said. “Her coworkers have been like family. So, I’m really proud. We did it.”
Ethan Edelbrock from Pemberville, Ohio, stayed close to home to attend medical college for a variety of reasons.
“The connection to the community, the connection to the patient population, the proximity to home and to my family and my support network,” he said. “It was just the perfect fit.”
For the newest members of the Rocket physician community, the white coat marks more than the beginning of four years of medical school. It represents a commitment to the patients and communities they will one day serve.
