The fourth candidate for provost and executive vice president for academic affairs held an open forum Monday to introduce himself to the University community and discuss how he would lead academic operations on UT’s Main Campus if selected.

Moreira

Dr. Antonio Moreira, vice provost for academic affairs at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County, talked about growing that school as a diverse research institution during his more than 20-year tenure there and the opportunities available at Toledo with the relatively new merged institution.

“It all comes down to trust and relationships,” he said. “I want to be engaged. I want to have a sense of the problems and a sense of the issues on campus and do what I can to move the institution forward.”

Moreira has been with the University of Maryland since 1990 when he joined the faculty as director and professor of the Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Program. Moreira also has served as associate provost, associate dean of engineering and department chair.

He also has held teaching and research positions at Colorado State University, the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, and the University of Oporto in Portugal.

In addition to his academic career, Moreira worked for the pharmaceutical company Schering-Plough Corp. in Union, N.J., now part of Merck, and in research and development at International Flavors & Fragrances in Union Beach, N.J., where he helped develop flavors of popular items such as McDonald’s French fries and Cheetos snacks.

Moreira answered questions about his experience in growing a diverse student body and faculty, funding challenges facing libraries, student recruitment competition in Maryland, shared governance and improving morale.

Four candidates for provost have visited campus. The other candidates are Dr. Carlo Montemagno, dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati; Dr. Janine Janosky, vice president at Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron; and Dr. Scott Scarborough, senior vice president and executive director of The University of Toledo Medical Center.

The person selected as UT’s next provost and executive vice president for academic affairs will succeed Dr. William McMillen, who is retiring after 30 years with UT and the former Medical College of Ohio/Medical University of Ohio.
