Dr. Rebecca Ramirez, an internist and hospitalist, joined the University on Aug. 15 from Healthcare Advisory Network, a management consulting firm serving health organizations, where she served as chief clinical advisor.

The chief physician executive is vital as The University of Toledo reorganizes its academic medical center and other clinical operations under UToledo Health to achieve greater efficiencies, align strategic goals and objectives, and create opportunities for mutual growth.

“Dr. Ramirez brings to UToledo a wealth of experience as a physician, clinical faculty member and hospital administrator and a passion for improving patient care, reducing costs and advancing bold goals,” UToledo President Gregory Postel said. “Her leadership will be key as we evolve and grow our clinical enterprise in a way that engages our hospital, clinics and physicians, as well as our community.”

The new UToledo Health structure includes the University of Toledo Medical Center and the University of Toledo Physicians and University of Toledo Dentists groups. The UToledo Health Board held its first meeting in July.

Ramirez provides vision, strategy, executive leadership and clinical oversight for the University of Toledo Physicians serving as its president and chief executive officer. In collaboration with the CEO of UTMC, the chief physician executive provides leadership for UToledo Health.

“I am energized to serve at The University of Toledo alongside many dedicated, talented people during this transformative time,” Ramirez said. “Together, while we grow our enterprise, we will achieve well-deserved national prominence for clinical excellence.”

Postel thanked Dr. Kris Brickman, UToledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences senior associate dean for innovation and simulation, professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and director of the Office of Global Health, for his leadership as the transitional chief physician executive since November.

Before working at Healthcare Advisory Network, Ramirez served as chief transformation officer and chief hospitalist officer for Kettering Health in Kettering, Ohio. Her career includes progressive leadership roles as chair of medicine and medical director at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in Columbus, assistant professor, and associate program director for the internal medicine residency program at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Ramirez earned a master’s degree in healthcare management from Harvard University, a medical degree from Wright State University, a master’s degree in social science administration from Case Western Reserve University, and a bachelor of art degree from Skidmore College. She completed internal medicine and pediatrics residencies at the Indiana University School of Medicine and was chief resident.
