UToledo Partners With Medical Mutual for Employee Health Insurance

The University of Toledo will offer health insurance options to employees through a new partnership with Medical Mutual of Ohio.

The University’s medical plans will be administrated by Medical Mutual of Ohio effective Jan. 1, 2023. All employees will need to update their information during the annual open enrollment period for benefits in October for the upcoming calendar year.

“Medical Mutual has provided excellent customer service and wellness programs for the University in the past and we are looking forward to working with them again,” said Mark Bercheni, senior director for total rewards. “Medical Mutual offers our employees a much broader network, excellent customer service and enhanced technology, in addition to cost savings for the University. With their state-wide network and partnership with a national carrier, we’re confident our employees’ current providers will be in network while adding even more care provider options.”

The University had a long partnership with Paramount for employee medical insurance. UToledo conducted a request for proposal process in 2022 to explore opportunities for cost savings and enhanced service options and selected Medical Mutual of Ohio.

As UToledo and Medical Mutual of Ohio finalize the design of the health insurance plans, additional information will be made available in advance of the benefits open enrollment period.

The University of Toledo Medical Center and University of Toledo Physicians providers will remain tier 1 providers with the lowest co-insurance, co-pay and other out-of-pocket expenses. And now with Medical Mutual of Ohio’s statewide network, more doctors and hospitals in the state of Ohio are covered including ProMedica, Mercy and McLaren healthcare providers.

UToledo has approximately 10,000 individuals covered under its health insurance plan through employees and their dependents. The contract with Medical Mutual of Ohio is for three years, and also includes increased employee wellness programs.

The UToledo Human Resources Department will host a virtual town hall meeting at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, via Webex to provide additional information on the switch to Medical Mutual of Ohio and to answer employee questions.
