The Carlson Library is highlighting the building blocks of art education alongside student artwork of the past — including a pair of UToledo alumnae — in its newest exhibit.

The display, on view through the end of the year on the fifth floor of the Carlson Library, incorporates books from the Toledo Museum of Art Reference Library’s collections related to art education and design, as well as plentiful archival material from the TMA Archives and Manuscripts collections and books from the Canaday Center for Special Collections.

The exhibit also highlights UToledo alumnae Eleanor Bennet, whose artwork is seen in this photo, and Clara Louise West.

The exhibit also highlights UToledo alumnae Eleanor Bennet and Clara Louise West, who are also alumnae of the Toledo Museum of Art School of Design.

Bennet, a Toledo native, started at the School of Design in 1926 when she was only 11. She attended UToledo and minored in Fine Art, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1936. She continued her passion for the arts by being active in the Toledo Artist’s Club, the Toledo Federation of Art Societies, Athena Art Society and Toledo Women’s Art League after graduation.

West attended the School of Design in the 1920s-30s and went on to the University, eventually serving as the assistant art editor for The Blockhouse during her time on campus. She graduated in 1931 and some of her illustrations in the 1930 Blockhouse are on display in the exhibit.

This exhibit is curated by TMA Reference Library Assistant Librarian Meg Milewski, and Head Librarian Alison Huftalen.
