Student enrollment for fall semester 2022 is 15,603, according to The University of Toledo’s 15-day census numbers.

UToledo expected fewer students on campus due to a number of contributing factors and is responding with enhanced student recruitment efforts and strategic planning to enhance existing and add new programs to make the University more competitive.

“While a decline in enrollment this fall wasn’t unexpected, it is unsustainable,” UToledo President Gregory Postel said. “Enrollment has been a challenge at UToledo for a number of years. We will continue to think creatively about student recruitment, but we also must reevaluate our operations as a University with 15,000 students rather than the UToledo of the past with 20,000 students. This year as we develop our strategic plan, we are prioritizing our limited resources to have the greatest impact for our current and future students and our community.”

Several factors contributed to UToledo’s current enrollment, which includes 11,977 undergraduate students and 3,626 graduate and professional students making up nearly one quarter of the student population.

The COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted new students coming to UToledo and also in the number of students returning to continue their education.

The University also has been graduating more students. The latest preliminary six-year graduation rate for students who began their studies in fall semester 2016 is 56.5%, a new highest rate on record that bested the previous year’s 56.3%.

The current enrollment numbers do reflect early efforts to recruit different types of students to UToledo with a declining population of high school graduates pursuing higher education in Ohio and nationally. Growth areas include international students, new adult students and students returning to college after time away.
