Since 1872, The University of Toledo has been a gateway to opportunity for hundreds of thousands of students – a legacy that continues during its sesquicentennial celebration.

When the University officially recognizes its 150th birthday with a full schedule of activities on Wednesday, Oct. 12, it will also launch a yearlong fundraising campaign for everyone in the Rocket community to help deserving students. As part of the historic milestone, all contributions to the $5 million effort will directly support need-based scholarships – either at the campaign level or within a UToledo college of choice.

“This is a special moment in time and we’ve found a special way to celebrate,” said Floyd Akins, vice president for university advancement. “Our vision is that financial strain is never a barrier for motivated students with a passion to learn, and we can only realize that dream with the support of the Rocket community.”

Thousands of UToledo students are working through an uncertain economy to earn their diplomas. For the academic year 2021-22, 77% of enrolled students had costs of attendance higher than their families had the ability to cover. Among undergraduates, 56% received some type of need-based aid.

“This is a thrilling milestone. We’re honoring our history, celebrating in the present and embarking on our future all at once,” said William Pierce, associate vice president of alumni engagement and annual giving, and co-chair of the sesquicentennial planning committee.

“Our students, on campus and working through classes right now, are that future.”

The commemorative Founder’s Day celebration takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 12, featuring a day of fun, food, fireworks and music, headlined by Grammy-winning rapper T-Pain. The festivities are supported by generous sponsors, including Kripke Enterprises and ParkUToledo.

Established in 1872, The University of Toledo has a storied history with more than 168,000 alumni around the world. The year-long sesquicentennial celebration will recognize the historic milestones, achievements and the positive impact the University has had since its founding 150 years ago.
