Freshman Ateeq Najib used his early interest in comic books and his passion for storytelling to publish the first issue of his graphic novel series, “Kusaguma: The Stone Escapade.”

A dystopian graphic novel, “Kusaguma” offers readers an action-packed, coming-of-age story that follows characters on journeys of self-discovery as futuristic faction groups attempt to take control of a powerful stone at the center of their post-apocalyptic world.

Freshman Ateeq Najib holds his recently published first issue of his graphic novel series, “Kusaguma: The Stone Escapade.”

After nearly four years of conceptualizing the storyline, UToledo freshman Ateeq Najib worked with a trio of artists who helped him transform his ideas and chapter drafts into a graphic novel.

After nearly four years of conceptualizing the storyline, Najib worked with a trio of artists who helped him transform his ideas and chapter drafts into a graphic novel. Published earlier this year, “The Stone Escapade” is the first issue of the series and contains five chapters.

“When I look at it, I get very proud of myself,” he said. “I finally brought something to life that I’ve wanted to bring to life for years.”

Najib said the most rewarding part of the publication process is the amount of support he’s received from his family, friends and professors at The University of Toledo, including Dr. Pearson, an associate professor of English.

“When I found out Ateeq had published a graphic novel, I immediately recommended he take my graphic narratives and adaptations course,” Pearson said.

Pearson’s newly designed course, ENGL4950: Graphic Narratives and Adaptations, introduces students to the world of comics and graphic novels, explores their history and place in literature and challenges students with the task of producing their own graphic narratives.

“Ateeq is a vibrant addition to the course. He’s not afraid to ask questions or to challenge concepts from established artists and critics, which is a trait I’ve seen in other great artists,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing his ambitions continue to grow and manifest.”

As the writer and creator of the graphic novel, Najib said he looks forward to adding more issues to the series and hopes that it will have at least a two-decade run.

His advice for other creatives looking to publish their own work is to be confident in their artistry and to gain exposure through networking opportunities.

“If it is something that you like and you believe that people should see, take the risk,” Najib said. “You would be surprised at how supportive people can be.”

“Kusaguma: The Stone Escapade” is available locally at Barnes and Noble, 4940 Monroe St., Monarch Comics, 4400 Heatherdowns Blvd. in the Colonial Village Shopping Center, and at Amazon.com.
