Toledo’s final tournament of its 2012 fall campaign proved to be a memorable one for Head Coach Jamie Broce and sophomore Chris Selfridge. The Rockets won their first tournament under their first-year mentor at the Georgetown Intercollegiate while Selfridge captured his first collegiate title with a career-low five-under 208 (69-70-69).

The Rockets won their first tournament under Head Coach Jamie Broce at the Georgetown Intercollegiate.

The 12-team tournament was held at The Members Club at Four Streams in Beallsville, Md.

Toledo registered an 11-over par 863 (290-285-288) on the par-71, 6,952-yard course to edge second-place Notre Dame by two strokes. Penn State (871), Xavier (872) and Michigan State (878) rounded out the top five.

“It was a total team effort and that’s what you need to win a tournament,” Broce said. “I’m very proud of our guys, not just for winning, but how they are maturing on and off the course. This was huge for the team and for Chris. It’s a great way to finish the fall.”

Selfridge, who entered the tourney ranked second in the Mid-American Conference with a 72.4 stroke average, edged out Eastern Michigan’s Brian Churchill-Smith (69-69-71=209). He did most of his damage on the par-five holes and with a tournament-best seven-under on par 5s.

Freshman Otto Black also came up big for the Rockets with a season-best fifth-place showing. He fired back-to-back 69s in the last two rounds for a season-best fifth-place showing at even-par 213 (75-69-69).

“Chris played great all tournament and never was in trouble,” Broce said. “Otto played very aggressive and showed real maturity for a freshman after having a triple bogey in each of the first two rounds.”

Toledo also received solid performances in the tournament from sophomore Mike Lancaster (tied for 20th/72-73-75=220), sophomore Pat Cermak (tied for 38th/76-74-75=225) and sophomore Jamie Richardson (tied for 42nd/74-73-79=226).

“Mike, Jamie and Pat each played smart golf,” Broce said. “The course wasn’t easy, and it would have been easy to get frustrated, but our guys hung tough after making a mistake.”

The Rockets will open their spring season with the Mid-American Match Play event Feb. 11-12 in Dade City, Fla.
