With water making up at least half of our overall body weight, it’s probably no surprise that staying hydrated is important for overall health.

But do you really need the oft-cited eight glasses of water a day? And how often should you be going to the bathroom?

In the latest episode of Prescribed Listening, Dr. Coral Matus explains what proper hydration looks like, the role water plays in our bodies and what can happen if you aren’t drinking enough.

Matus, a family medicine specialist at The University of Toledo Medical Center, also offers some tips on how you can boost your hydration without relying only on plain tap water.

New episodes of Prescribed Listening’s fifth season — which expands on common themes explored in the podcast’s previous season — will be released on Fridays over the next few weeks.
