The Division of Students Affairs, University Libraries and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are hosting UToledo’s second “Human Library” on Wednesday, Nov. 8, in Thompson in Student Union Room 2592.
The event, which runs from 3 to 6 p.m., provides a safe environment to allow “readers” the chance to have a short interaction with a human “book,” someone who has faced bias, prejudice, or other struggles based on their race, gender, sexuality, disability, medical or emotional diagnosis, religious or political beliefs, or occupation.
“Human Books” will be available to check out for 15-minute sessions, and readers are invited to to check out as many different books as they can during the event. All the Human Books are members of the UToledo community, including faculty, staff, students and alumni.
No sign up is required and all UToledo students, staff and faculty are welcome.
“Being able to connect with so many readers and sharing many of the same experiences impacted me the most during this event.” said one participant, “Immigrant,” in the 2022 Human Library Book event.
The ADHD participant from last year’s event added, “I met a reader who also had ADHD and it felt like talking to a mirror.”
And one of the 2022 Human Library “readers” said, “Participating in the Human Library event has inspired me to be more open or accepting towards things I’m not familiar with.”
