The University of Toledo Department of Art recently unveiled new lab spaces in the Center for Visual Arts.

Supported by a grant from the Women and Philanthropy at The University of Toledo Foundation, the W&P: Axon Lab/Studio includes new spaces and updates to pre-existing spaces. Construction began in 2020 and was completed this fall.

Among the renovations, the project added sound panels to the digital lab, redesigned a studio space and converted two small office spaces to spaces for a 3D printer and VR and sound. The new spaces combine new and old technologies that are housed in the Center for Sculptural Studies, including a foundry, woodshop, laser etchers and ceramics studio.

“The W&P: Axon Lab/Studio is a hub where technology, creativity and interdisciplinary practices converge and move learning forward,” said Barbara Miner, chair of the Department of Art.

“We believe that bringing the tools and the classroom together in a new way has allowed for deeper learning of the hard and soft skills necessary to enable our students to compete successfully for jobs or graduate school entry.”
