The teaching and research expertise of faculty members in The University of Toledo College of Medicine were celebrated earlier this month with the 20th annual faculty recognition event.

Five professors received Dean’s Awards for Teaching Excellence, and three were honored with research awards. The Faculty Recognition Reception, which was held Nov. 1 in the Dana Center on Health Science Campus, also included recognition of emeritus faculty and those with 10, 20, 30 and for the first time, 40 years of service to the college.

“This is the 20th anniversary of an event in celebration of our faculty members and to honor them for their dedication and commitment to the mission and goals of the College of Medicine and the University,” said Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold, chancellor, executive vice president for biosciences and health affairs, and dean of the College of Medicine. “This is a time to recognize faculty members for their longtime service and to honor individuals who have excelled in teaching and research.”

In a new format for the long-standing awards ceremony, people who nominated the recipients of the awards, and in many cases were their mentors, introduced the winners.

The five faculty members who were honored with a Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence were: Dr. Ragheb Assaly, professor in the Department of Medicine; Dr. Steven Farrell, associate professor and chief of the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; Dr. Masud Hashmi, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery; Dr. Joseph Margiotta, professor in the Department of Neurosciences; and Dr. Paul Schaefer, assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine, who was recognized as a rising star junior faculty member.

Dr. Imran Ali, professor in the Department of Neurology, was recognized with the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Education that honors select gifted educators for their vision, commitment and dedication to education.

The research awards were given to Dr. Elizabeth Tietz, professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Dr. James Willey, professor in the Department of Medicine, and Dr. Ivana de la Serna, assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Cancer Biology, who was recognized as a new investigator in the college.

Emeritus faculty honored were Dr. Donald Godfrey, Department of Surgery; Dr. A. John McSweeny, departments of Psychiatry and Neurology; Joy Skeel, departments of Psychiatry and Medicine; and Dr. Robert Douglas Wilkerson, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology.

For the first time in the 20-year history of the awards program, a faculty member had contributed 40 years of service to the college — Dr. Maurice Manning, UT Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Cancer Biology. Manning thanked everyone who has played a role in his long and distinguished career and who with him believe education is of the utmost importance.

Dr. Richard Lane, professor in the Department of Neurosciences, was honored for 30 years of service. There also were four faculty members recognized for 20 years of service and 29 people for 10 years of service.
