The University of Toledo Medical Center is supporting a local holiday tradition and covering all entrance fees to the National Museum of the Great Lakes on Saturday, Dec. 2.
For the last decade, the East Toledo museum has welcomed the holiday season by organizing a dockside delivery of fresh-cut Christmas trees. UTMC is this year’s presenting sponsor.
The annual event, which hearkens back to the days when wooden schooners delivered trees to port cities across the Great Lakes, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the museum.
“We know health isn’t always just about your doctor’s appointment. It’s also about finding ways to connect with family and friends during the holidays and being able to take part in meaningful activities with those you love,” said
Jennifer Archer, UTMC’s assistant director of community engagement and volunteer services. “As a community-focused hospital, we take a holistic approach to health and quality of life. We’re proud to be able to support a well-loved event and provide our entire community this opportunity.”
Individuals can purchase a tree for themselves or buy one to be given to a family in need.
The museum also is collecting monetary donations to benefit community support organizations including East Toledo Family Center, Family House, Lucas County Children Services and Sylvania Area Family Services
In addition to providing free entry to the museum, UTMC will match individual gifts with a healthy hygiene kit containing items such as shampoo and toothbrushes for community members in need.
Those interested in purchasing a tree for themselves or to donate can do so through Tuesday, Nov. 28, by visiting the National Museum of the Great Lakes website or calling 419.214.5000.
“We hope members of the hospital team and our entire campus community will take advantage of this, coming out to create memories and to support our local community,” Archer said.
