The University of Toledo Board of Trustees has appointed the academic council for the recently created Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership.

The seven-member council, which was nominated at a Nov. 14 meeting of the board’s Trusteeship and Governance Committee, includes influential legal scholars and educators from Ohio and across the country.

Members are:

•  Joel Alicea, an associate professor of law and co-director of the Project on Constitutional Originalism and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition at the Catholic University of America in Washington;

•  Nicole Garnett, an education and property law scholar who is associate dean for external engagement and the John O. Murphy Foundation Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame;

•  Paul Milazzo, an associate professor of history specializing in 20th century U.S. history at Ohio University;

•  Darrell Miller, a constitutional law scholar and the Melvin G. Shimm Professor of Law at Duke University;

•  Bradley Smith, an election and campaign finance law scholar and the Josiah H. Blackmore II/Shirley M. Nault Professor at Capital University;

•  Lee Strang, a nationally recognized constitutional law expert, the John W. Stoepler Professor of Law and Values at UToledo; and director of the Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership; and

•  Richard Walinski, a graduate of the UToledo College of Law who is a leading scholar of the Ohio constitution.

“The Committee approved an exceptional slate of nominees for the academic council. The nominees are all very accomplished scholars in their own right who together form a well-rounded and integrated package that supports the institute’s mission,” said Trustee Stephen Ciucci, who chairs the board’s Trusteeship and Governance Committee. “I am excited to watch this institute, under the direction of professor Lee Strang, fulfill its mission of educating students in the principles, ideals and institutions of the American and Ohio constitutions with a commitment to free expression and intellectual diversity.”

The UToledo Institute of Constitutional Thought and Leadership was created and funded by the Ohio Legislature earlier this year to help develop future leaders and to provide a space for diverse voices to discuss and debate key questions about American society, history and politics, both past and present.
