The University of Toledo was recently awarded more than $1 million in State of Ohio funds for scholarships supporting students studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
The Ohio Department of Higher Education announced the funding as part of its latest round of awards under the Choose Ohio First scholarship program. Intended to increase the state’s competitiveness in STEM, Choose Ohio First awards competitive funding to Ohio colleges and universities to support students studying a slew of designated disciplines.
“More than 750 students have benefited from a Choose Ohio First Scholarship at UToledo since 2009,” said Dr. Scott Molitor, Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. “These scholarships are a win-win for the students and for the communities that they strengthen across the state when they go on to in-demand careers in science, technology, engineering and math.”
The Ohio Department of Higher Education considers proposals annually from Ohio colleges and universities and provides funding to award Choose Ohio First scholarships to students who are Ohio residents. Colleges and universities also recruit, select and support their own Choose Ohio First Scholars.
“These Choose Ohio First awardees, including University of Toledo, represent Ohio’s best when it comes to preparing STEM scholars for success in the workforce,” Ohio Chancellor Randy Gardner said. “I commend University of Toledo for its efforts in the Choose Ohio First program and for being among this latest group of deserving awardees.”
