Two Rockets earn All-MAC honors; one named to All-Freshman Team

Senior Tre’Shaun Fletcher, junior Jaelan  Sanford and freshman guard Marreon Jackson were recognized Monday with the announcement of the Mid-American Conference all-league squads.

Fletcher earned a spot on the first team, marking the fifth time in the last six seasons a Rocket has been tabbed as one of the league’s top five players. Sanford was a second-team all-conference selection, while Jackson earned a spot on the All-MAC Freshman Team.

The All-MAC teams were determined from voting by the league’s 12 head coaches.

A 6-foot-7, 215-pound guard, Fletcher leads the Rockets with 18.7 points (third in MAC), 8.2 rebounds (fourth in MAC) and 4.5 assists per game (third in MAC) and is the only MAC player to rank in the top 10 in each category. He registered the second triple-double in program history Feb. 27 at Northern Illinois by tallying 20 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high 11 assists. Fletcher has paced the Rockets in points, assists, steals and rebounds on a team-high 28, 17, 15 and 12 occasions, respectively, and also has produced a team-high 15 20-point outings.

Sanford, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound guard who is earning all-league honors for the first time, ranks ninth in MAC scoring with 16.3 points per game. Sanford also is listed among the league leaders with his 85.6 free-throw percentage (second) and his 40.1 three-point field-goal percentage (10th). He has performed even better in conference action with his league-best 88.2 free-throw mark, and 43.6 three-point shooting clip that ranks eighth. Sanford has scored 20 or more points in 10 contests this season, including a career-high 31-point showing vs. Saint Joseph’s Nov. 11. He has paced the Rockets in scoring on seven occasions and in assists in eight contests.

A 6-0, 170-pound guard, Jackson has started 29 of 30 games this season and averaged 7.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while posting a solid 1.8 assist/turnover ratio. He ranks sixth in the MAC with a 41.3 three-point field-goal percentage and scored a season-high 15 points with a season-best five three-point field goals at Western Michigan Jan. 23.

Toledo will return to action Thursday, March 8, at 6:30 p.m. in Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena when it begins post-season play in the 2018 MAC Tournament Quarterfinals against either No. 7 seed Miami or No. 10 seed Ohio. The Rockets are the No. 2 seed in the tourney and have received a bye in the event in three of the last five years.
