Dr. Amy Thompson, vice provost of academic affairs and professor of public health, has been elected to lead the Society for Public Health Education, Inc.

The three-year commitment includes serving as president-elect, president and immediate past president of the organization from April through spring 2024. A leading public health professional organization, SOPHE was founded in 1950 to provide professional development, to promote research and to advocate for health-related policy.
“Dr. Thompson brings outstanding skills, vision and partnerships to further enhance our SOPHE leadership team,” said SOPHE President Dr. Cam Escoffery. “She will further strengthen our global leadership for the profession of health education and health promotion and the promotion of a healthy and equitable society.”
Thompson, who spent two terms as trustee for advocacy and resolutions on SOPHE’s Board of Trustees, said she is humbled and excited to serve in the role of president-elect.
“There has never been a more important time due to COVID-19 to shine the light on the significance of public health and its role in the community,” she said. “I look forward to making a difference and in helping address some of the pressing public health issues such as racism, social determinants of health, opioids, gun violence and the eradication of COVID-19.”
