Helping others through a day of service, inspiring female entrepreneurs, encouraging women to get involved in politics, and hearing from an expert on race, gender, class and social movements — that’s what The University of Toledo has planned for Women’s History Month.
“It’s important to intentionally create space for uplifting women,” Dr. Angela Fitzpatrick, director of the Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women, said. “Our theme this year, ‘Celebrating Persistence,’ honors the legacy of courageous women who took risks, who picked themselves up after falling, and who fought to make the world a better place.”

• Wednesday, March 4 — Women’s History Month Jeopardy, 6 p.m., Eberly Center for Women, Tucker Hall Room 0152. Stop by for trivia and pizza.
• Friday, March 13 — Eberly Center Day of Service, 10 a.m., Eberly Center for Women, Tucker Hall Room 0152. Volunteers will visit the Beach House Family Shelter, a local charity that helps homeless families regain independence as they transition to permanent housing. “The Eberly Center is excited to partner with Beach House Family Shelter to provide a service-learning opportunity that looks at gender inequities in Toledo,” Fitzpatrick said. A program on gender equity, housing security and activism will take place in the morning; lunch will be provided before volunteers head to the Beach House Family Shelter. • Wednesday, March 18 — Courageous Conversation, 5:30 p.m., Scott Park Campus Room 1080C. The Eberly Center and the Minority Business Development Center will host a conversation on women’s leadership in business. Dinner will be provided. • Wednesday, March 25 — Participation Equals Representation: Why It’s Time to Come Off the Political Sidelines, student session at 4:30 p.m., panel discussion at 6 p.m., Thompson Student Union Room 2591. “Politically, the more we engage, the more we achieve,” said Shiloh Todorov, director of finance and development with the Matriots, a nonpartisan political action committee dedicated to electing more women. “Research shows a clear correlation between American women’s political giving and their representation in elected office. But the research also shows women lag drastically behind men in political giving. This panel discussion will help you think about where, how and why you must engage in the political process.” The free, public panel event is co-sponsored by the Matriots.
• Thursday, March 26 — Channeling Confidence: Landing That Next Opportunity, 12pm Tucker Hall room 1052. “The gender confidence gap is a well-documented social phenomenon with far reaching implications,” Fitzpatrick said. “It’s crucial that women learn how to promote themselves for awards, job applications, and promotions.” The workshop will be facilitated by Aleiah Jones, program coordinator in the Office of Multicultural Student Success and recipient of the 2020 Outstanding New Latinx Professional Award from the American College Personnel Association.
• Saturday, March 28 — Keynote Talk and Workshop with Dr. Melina Abdullah, professor and chair of Pan-African Studies at California State University at Los Angeles and co-founder of the Los Angeles chapter of Black Lives Matter, 11 a.m., Toledo Lucas County Public Library, 325 N. Michigan St. “Dr. Abdullah will speak on the significance of black women’s voting and political work,” Fitzpatrick said. “Then she will lead a workshop on how to move beyond political resistance toward a new vision of liberation.” Seating for the workshop at 12:30 p.m. is limited; register on the Eberly Center’s web page.
