Math Corps, a nationally recognized mathematics enrichment and mentoring program for middle school students, is coming to The University of Toledo.

UToledo is accepting applications for its free, four-week Math Corps Summer Camp and High School Bridge Program, which serves students in underrepresented communities in the Toledo area who will be entering 7th or 8th grade in the fall.

The co-founder of the program also will speak at UToledo next month about the mission of Math Corps to empower and inspire children and to inform families about how Math Corps improves math skills and scores.

Using a “kids teaching kids” model, high school students entering the 10th or 11th grade in the fall also can apply to serve as paid teaching assistants for the younger students, and college students will serve as college instructors.

Each day the middle school students will receive instruction from University faculty and enjoy a variety of learning activities led by the college and high school students.

“We are proud to offer children in Toledo the opportunity to participate at no cost in a program that has shown dramatic results for student success, community engagement, and diversity, equity and inclusion,” said Dr. Funda Gultepe, executive director of Math Corps at UToledo and assistant professor in the UToledo Department of Mathematics and Statistics. “Test scores typically increase in just a few weeks from pre-test averages of 30% to post-test averages of 90%. Plus, the academic gains are sustained over time. Middle school participants were 11% more likely to enroll in college.”

The camp runs Monday, July 11, through Friday, Aug. 5. The hours for 7th and 8th graders are 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For 10th and 11th graders, the hours are 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

The deadline to apply is Wednesday, May 11. Visit the Math Corps at UToledo website to apply.

Dr. Steve Kahn, the co-founder of Math Corps and director of the Wayne State University Center for Excellence and Equity in Mathematics, will speak at UToledo at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, in Nitschke Auditorium in Nitschke Hall.
