The UToledo Department of Women’s and Gender Studies will host a student research showcase on Tuesday, Feb. 8, to highlight two students’ projects to the greater UToledo community.
Geneva Krieger, a senior studying women’s and gender studies, will present her project titled “Healthcare: A Content Analysis of Women in Benzodiazepine Advertisements.”
Kylee Gregg, a senior studying social work with a minor in women’s and gender studies, will present her project titled “Death Becomes Her: An Exploration into Woman Funeral Directors and Embalmers”
The event is scheduled from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at University Hall Room 4280 and livestreamed via Webex. Each speaker will present for 20 minutes with a Q&A session to follow.
This is the first in a semester-long series of student research showcases, which have been a tradition for more than a decade.
“The Women’s Studies Student Research Showcase has been a great opportunity for our students to share some of the outstanding research they are doing in our courses,” said Dr. Sharon Barnes, associate professor and chair of the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. “Over the years, we’ve had fantastic presentations on everything from fast fashion and eating disorders to transnational feminist NGO activism and the impact of UN Women and everything in between.
“This semester we have another fantastic set of showcase presentations, beginning with WGST senior Geneva Krieger’s look at medical advertising and senior WGST minor Kylee Gregg’s look at female funeral directors and embalmers. Both students have future careers related to their topics of choice and their work emerged out of research projects focused on making connections between their academic curriculum and their future careers.”
