The University of Toledo’s Judith Herb College of Education is hosting its annual spring symposium, which will examine the diversity and cultural competency in educators as a benefit to the youth and families they serve.
The two-day virtual event, titled “Cultural Competence as an Ongoing Project: Learning From Our Communities, Our Students and Ourselves,” is Friday, April 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to noon.
“In order for teachers to be culturally competent with African American youth, they should increase their knowledge of the culture, history and language of African Americans,” said Rahwae Shuman, Toledo Kwanzaa House youth mentor. “They should also conduct an honest self-assessment for bias.”
Attendees will hear from two groups of guest panelists from local school districts and nonprofits each day of the symposium, and will have the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions, social hours and virtual presentations from students, staff and faculty.
