Through April, The University of Toledo celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with several in-person events.
“OMSS is excited to celebrate the diversity of the Asian American Pacific Islander and Desi American Community,” said Robert Woodley, Office of Multicultural Student Success program manager for retention. “We are looking forward to students from all backgrounds enjoying the events and learning about Asian American heritage.”
Events include:
• Thursday, April 6, 1 p.m. — Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Kickoff viewing of “Amy Tan (Unintended Memoir)” in the OMSS Office in Thompson Student Union Room 2500. Amy Tan’s painful family legacy inspired her stories of women without the power to choose their lives. Journey through the groundbreaking author’s life and career with archival imagery, artful animation and original interviews.
• Wednesday, April 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. — Japanese Tea Ceremony will be held in the Memorial Fieldhouse. Hosted by the Japanese Student Association and World Languages and Cultures. Enjoy tea and sweets in a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony.
• Tuesday, April 25, from 4 to 5 p.m. — Conversation Table in Memorial Field House Room 2420. Play games … in Japanese. All levels are welcome.
• Tuesday, April 25, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. — Asian Pacific Islander Desi American event called “I Hear Your Voice.” Join us in a discussion with a diverse panel and discuss issues and concerns of the day pertaining to the AAPI community. The event will take place in the Stranahan Hall basement. Hosted by the Office of Multicultural Student Success and Pi Sigma Epsilon, JSA, FAA, TLSA and CASA.
• Wednesday, April 26, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. — Asian Night Market in the Thompson Student Union Ingman Room. Experience an Asian Night Market on campus and learn about different cultural practices and activities from a variety of Asian countries. Hosted by the Office of Multicultural Student Success and the Center for International Studies and Programs.
There also will be a screening of “Parasite,” the Best Picture-winning comedy-thriller co-written and directed by Bong Joon-ho that juxtaposes a rich and a poor South Korean family and what binds them, at Stranahan Theatre in conjunction with Pi Sigma Epsilon. The screening date and time are to be determined.
