UToledo Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month With Events Through Oct. 15

The University of Toledo Office of Multicultural Student Success and the Global Latinx Student Union are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, from Friday, Sept. 15, through Sunday, Oct. 15, with events devoted to Hispanic culture and heritage.

“We have some great events for this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month this year,” said Kyndra Gaines, multicultural program manager of the Office of Multicultural Student Success. “We are especially excited to partner with NAMI of Greater Toledo for NAMI’s 8th Annual Latino Leadership Forum. This year, we are adding some new events. It will be a lot of fun to network and fellowship with students, faculty, staff and the Toledo community.”

Campus events and activities planned for Hispanic Heritage Month include:

•  Friday, Sept. 15 — 2023 Ohio Latino Affairs Summit from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kent Student Center, 1075 Risman Dr. in Kent, Ohio. The theme is “¡Juntos! Latino Growth Is Ohio Growth.” To register for the forum, visit the event’s webpage.

•  Tuesday, Sept. 19 —¡Bienvenidos! at noon in Thompson Student Union Room 2500 to kick off the month.

•  Thursday, Sept. 28 — Loteria Night, featuring the bingo-like game loteria (Spanish for “lottery”) that uses images and a deck of cards istead of numbered balls, at 6:30 p.m. in Thompson Student Union Room 2500.

•  Tuesday, Oct.3 — 34th annual Diamante Awards at 6 p.m. at Owens Community College Student Health and Activities Center (SHAC). Visit the event’s webpage to purchase tickets.

•  Friday, Oct. 6 —NAMI Greater Toledo 8th Annual Latino Leadership Forum from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center, 1222 Broadway St. in Toledo. The theme is “Continuing to Break the Barriers of Mental Health in Our Latino Community.” Register for the forum through the event’s webpage.

•  Tuesday, Oct. 10 — Latino Mocktails “Happy Hour” at 5 p.m. in Thompson Student Union Room 2500. Join OMSS for a “Happy Hour” of fun cultural mocktails to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Also in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Latin American Studies has a free online library of documentaries and films available through kanopy, and the Office of Multicultural Student Success has links to virtual national exhibitions, events and tours on its Hispanic Heritage Month website. Carlson Library encourages students to check out books by Latinx authors and explore a different perspective.
