The University of Toledo is celebrating Jewish Heritage Month throughout April with several scheduled events that will explore Shabbat and community building.
“Jewish Heritage Month provides a time when I can express who I am as a Jewish student, and other students can have the experience to learn about a culture and a religion that they may not be familiar with,” said Jordan Slutsky, executive board member of Hillel. “I am looking forward to all of the events that are planned this year to celebrate what it means to be a Jewish student.”
Among the events:
• Tuesday, April 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. – Shabbat 101 in the Office of Multicultural Student Success in Thompson Student Union Room 2500. Learn about the Jewish tradition and religious ceremony of Shabbat and craft with us.
• Thursday, April 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. – Potato Fest will be the first of its kind. Join the Honors College, MacKinnon-Scott-Tucker and Honors Academic Village for this collaborative event outside of HAV. Visit tables from various student cultural organizations to learn about their favorite potato-based dishes and even sample a few.
• Monday, April 15, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. – “The Prince of Egypt” screening will take place in Doermann Theater. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and free refreshments will be provided.
• Sunday, April 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. – Join Equality Toledo and Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) for Rainbow Equality Seder at Handmade Toledo. It will follow the customs and order of a traditional Passover seder and will focus on chronicling our collective liberation as LGBTQ+ people, as Jews, as LGBTQ+ Jews and others. The event is free and open to all. Students may RSVP for transportation through InvoNet. Visit the event’s website for more information and event registration.
• Thursday, April 25, 6 p.m. – Jewish Cooking Club at the Hillel House, 2012 Brookdale Rd. Join us for an evening of community, conversation and tasty treats while we make matzo crack together.
