National Public Radio host Leila Fadel will present The University of Toledo’s 24th Annual Maryse and Ramzy Mikhail Memorial Lecture on Monday, Sept. 9.

Fadel is a host of NPR’s “Morning Edition,” as well as the morning news podcast “Up First.”

She previously served as an international correspondent based in Cairo, where she covered the Arab Spring and its aftermath throughout the Middle East. She was awarded the Lowell Thomas Award from the Overseas Press Club for her coverage of the 2013 coup in Egypt, and a Gracie Award for her 2017 story on a single mother in Tunisia whose two eldest daughters were brainwashed and joined the Islamic State.

Before she joined NPR, Fadel served as Cairo Bureau Chief for the Washington Post and covered the Iraq war for nearly five years with Knight Ridder, McClatchy Newspapers and the Washington Post. Her Iraq war coverage earned her the George Polk Award in 2007.

In 2016, Fadel was named the Council on Foreign Relations Edward R. Murrow Fellow. Her series, “Muslims in America: A New Generation,” produced in collaboration with National Geographic, won the prestigious Goldziher Prize in 2019.

Fadel was previously scheduled to present the Mikhail Lecture at UToledo in October 2023, but was called away on assignment in Gaza.

The lecture will be livestreamed on the University’s YouTube channel.

Visitor parking is free in Area 12, excluding reserved, metered and disability spaces.

The Maryse and Ramzy Mikhail Memorial Lecture has been a continuous event at UToledo since 2001. It is sponsored by the College of Arts and Letters and the Mikhail Endowment Fund, which was originally established through a donation from the Mikhail family to honor the work and contributions of Maryse Mikhail and her involvement in educational, philanthropic and interfaith organizations.

The Mikhail Endowment Fund supports an annual lecture dealing with Arab culture, history, politics, economics and other aspects of life in the Middle East, including issues of peace and justice. To make a tax-deductible contribution, go to the UToledo Foundation website.
