UToledo will celebrate its newest class of medical students with a white coat ceremony on Friday at 10 a.m. in Nitschke Auditorium. Tickets are required to attend.

White coat ceremonies are a rite of passage that commemorate students’ entry to medical school and serve as a reminder of the expectations and responsibilities for physicians-in-training.

UToledo’s event is held at the end of orientation week for first-year medical students.

“The white coat ceremony marks not only the beginning of a student’s clinical training, but also the start of a transformational journey and a life-long commitment to healing with compassion, respect and empathy,” said Dr. Imran Ali, dean of the UToledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. “This event also symbolizes our commitment to providing these students the training, guidance and mentorship that will help them become skilled physicians who are ready to care for their communities.”

This year’s incoming class of 175 medical students come to UToledo from across the country, representing more than 20 states. More than half — 63% — are Ohio residents, and approximately 22% are from northwest Ohio.

Nearly two dozen students completed their undergraduate degrees at UToledo. Cornell, Harvard, University of Michigan, Vanderbilt and Yale graduates are also represented among the med school class of 2029.

UToledo received more than 6,500 medical school applications this year.

In addition to the presentation of a white coat, Friday’s event will include a welcome from Ali and a recitation of the Medical Student Pledge of Ethics.
