The Training in Translational and Molecular Cell Dynamics program at UToledo is hosting a series of journal club workshops on the Health Science Campus throughout spring semester for training graduate students in scientific literature.

Led by faculty in the NIH-funded T32, G-RISE (T32 GM144873) program, the free, public workshops will address three topics:

•  Tuesday, Feb. 7. How to Read a Scientific Article, from noon to 2 p.m., Ruppert Health Center Room 0006. Dr. Lance Dworkin, professor and chair of the Department of Medicine and a nephrologist, will review a clinical article, and Dr. Rujun Gong, professor of medicine, will review a basic scientific article.

•  Thursday, March 16. How to Write a Scientific Article, from noon to 2 p.m., Block Health Science Building Seminar Room 375. Dr. Rafael Garcia-Mata, a professor of biological sciences, will discuss selecting a suitable journal, making your pitch to the editor and how to respond to the reviewer’s critiques.

•  Thursday, April 6. How to Peer-Review a Scientific Article, from noon to 2 p.m., Block Health Science Building Seminar Room 375. Dr. Scott Crawley, an assistant professor of biological sciences, will discuss submitting your critique to the editor — the whole process.

The sessions will be held in a workshop-style format. Articles will be provided and students are expected to read the articles ahead of time and to participate in the discussions.
