The UToledo Sexual Health Coalition is hosting Sexual Health Awareness Week Feb. 13-16 to raise awareness of campus resources, provide general information and an opportunity for the campus community to engage in activities around sexual health.

“Sexual health is a critical component of overall health and well-being. Unfortunately, most people don’t receive medically accurate, evidence-based, inclusive sexual health education,” said Dr. Kimberly McBride, an associate professor in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies.

“A lack of education may partially contribute to the higher rates of STI that we see among college students. Providing engaging, positive and safe opportunities for students to learn about sexual health is really what sexual health week is all about. I am very excited and honored to be a part of this initiative.”

Sexual Health Awareness Week will include valentine’s crafting, trivia and safe sex information, as well as a panel of sexual health experts. A walk-in sexual health clinic also will be available to provide safe sex kits and confidential HIV testing for students through The University of Toledo Medical Center’s Ryan White Program.

“While sexual health testing takes place regularly on campus and resources are available, we want to use the week’s events to connect our students to these services and reduce the stigma around sexual health,” said Danielle VanFleet, HIV testing coordinator.

The Sexual Health Coalition has representatives from various campus departments including Rocket Health, Recreational Services, the Eberly Center, UTMC, College of Nursing and The  Office of Multicultural Student Success.
