The Perspectives thought leadership series, presented by The University of Toledo and The Blade, continues Monday, March 24, with a panel discussion on the concerning rates of anxiety and depression among young people.

A UToledo psychologist will be joined by three national panelists for “Perspectives: The Mental Health Crisis Among Young People,” beginning at 6 p.m. in UToledo’s Doermann Theatre. Event parking is free in Area 1N.

The panel will be moderated by David Shribman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning, nationally syndicated columnist and executive editor emeritus of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Panelists are:

•  Jenny Karlen Elliott, head of student and academic life at the private boarding and day school Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut.

•  Kamala London, who as professor and chair of the UToledo Department of Psychology studies how children and adolescents are handled in the justice system and how social anxiety and other factors affect memory in children.

•  Michael Rich, founder and director of the Digital Wellness Lab that promotes positive and healthy digital media experiences for young people.

•  Kevin Stevens, a former professional hockey player and co-founder of the foundation Power Forward to combat addiction through education, de-stigmatizing and recovery programs.

Perspectives, launched by UToledo and The Blade in December, is a series of events in which national panelists discuss a variety of topics alongside UToledo experts.

“This is an important conversation on supporting youth mental health, and we are proud to highlight one of UToledo’s own thought leaders, Dr. Kamala London, as we learn more about how to best support the young people in our lives,” said Matt Schroeder, interim president of UToledo. “The Perspectives series continues to provide a valuable opportunity for UToledo and The Blade to invite the community to engage in interesting and timely discussions on our campus.”
