The Big Event, the largest, single-day student-run service project at The University of Toledo, is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23.
An annual UToledo event since 2001, the BIG Event’s slogan is “One Big Day, One Big Thanks, One BIG Event,” and its goal is to give back to the Toledo community.
“This highlights how BIG Event is our way of saying thank you to the greater Toledo community for its continued support of our campus community,” said Lily Hickey, a senior studying biology and the president of BIG Event.
The BIG Event kicks off at The University of Toledo Student Recreation Center at 9:30 a.m. Participants will then depart for their local Toledo service sites to provide a day of service including the Aurora Project Inc., Islamic Food Bank of Toledo, Toledo Area Metroparks and various community gardens.
This year, more than 600 students from 30-plus student organizations are expected to volunteer for the community-sponsored event, Hickey said.
“This event shows our dedication as Rockets to improve the condition of those around us. BIG Event works to unify all aspects of the community as local students donate their time, local nonprofits receive a day of service and local businesses and UToledo have invested financially to put on this event,” she said. “This event provides a clear message to the community that Toledo students are motivated to cultivate positive local change.”
