Howard Friedman, a Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Law at The University of Toledo, will discuss the growing number of court decisions protecting those who have religious objections to regulatory and anti-discrimination requirements in the 2023 Dr. Morton Goldberg Lecture Thursday, March 23, in McQuade Law Auditorium.
Titled “When Religious Liberty Divides Us – Free Exercise of Religion in the 21st Century,” Friedman’s lecture will include the discussion of bakers who refuse to provide wedding cakes for same-sex weddings, individuals who object to COVID mandates and social service agencies that limit their services to those who agree with their religious doctrines.
The free, public lecture is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and will be livestreamed at the event’s webpage. The event will be preceded by a reception from 5 to 6 p.m.
Friedman joined the UToledo faculty in 1970 and has published multiple books, articles and book chapters. He also is the creator and editor of Religion Clause, a blog devoted to legal and political developments in the free exercise of religion and the separation of church and state.
“I knew Dr. Goldberg personally,” Friedman said. “I was a member of his synagogue and greatly admire his accomplishments. I have been active for many years in Jewish interfaith and advocacy organizations at the state and national levels, as well as locally in Toledo, Atlanta and Detroit.”
The Dr. Morton Goldberg Lecture is hosted by the College of Law and funded by a grant through the Greater Toledo Community Foundation, a public charitable organization created by citizens to enrich the quality of life for individuals and families in the area.
In existence since 1973, the Foundation has more than 900 individual current funds with assets of approximately $435 million. The Foundation provides philanthropic services for individuals, families, businesses and corporations to meet their charitable giving needs.
