The Title IX Team will set up 388 red flags in Centennial Mall to represent the 3,886 which stands for the number of Toledo Police Department reports of domestic violence filed last year that involved intimate partner violence (felonious assaults, domestic violence and domestic violence threats). Each flag represents 10 reports.

“We hope that having these flags in Centennial mall will encourage folks to stop and reflect on the issue of intimate partner violence or start the conversation about it with their peers,” said Lindsay Tuttle, manager Title IX, Compliance, Prevention and Assessment. “It is important to continue to have conversations of what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like so that people reinforce a community with a commitment to safety.”

The Red Flag Campaign is rooted in using a bystander intervention strategy to bring attention to and to address dating/domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault. The Red Flag Campaign website states, “the campaign encourages campus community members to say something when they see warning signs (“red flags”) for sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, or stalking in relationships.”

“With this being my second year working with the Red Flag Campaign, it becomes more and more apparent how important this campaign is in educating others about healthy relationships,” said Centraya Forbes, Title IX graduate assistant. “I want others to be aware of what is going on around them and to recognize red flags in order to safely intervene.”

The University of Toledo Title IX Office is promoting Sexual Assault Awareness Month during the month of April by hosting various events. For a list of scheduled events during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, visit the Title IX Office website.
