UToledo Celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Through April, The University of Toledo celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with several in-person events.

“OMSS is excited to celebrate the diversity of the Asian American Pacific Islander Community,” said Isis Walker, Office of Multicultural Student Success program coordinator. “We are looking forward to students from all backgrounds enjoying the events and learning about Asian American heritage.”

Events include:

•  Sunday, April 3, 2 p.m. — Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Kickoff Performance in the Thompson Student Union Ingman Room. A live music performance and speech about Asian American activism featuring Simon Tam, founder and bassist of The Slants, among the first all-Asian American dance rock bands in the world. Tam also is a co-founder of The Slants Foundation, a nonprofit organization that is pushing the boundaries of what is possible for arts, activism and civic engagement.

•  Friday, April 15, 4 to 5:30 p.m. — Spring Chinese Culture Night in the Thompson Student Union Auditorium. A celebration of Chinese culture, the event will feature games, crafts, calligraphy and more. Hosted by the Chinese American Student Association, Chinese Students and Scholars Association and the Center for International Studies and Programs.

•  Wednesday, April 20, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Japanese Culture Festival in Thompson Student Union Room 2592. Learn about Japanese culture by painting your own wooden Kokeshi dolls; playing Hanetsuki, a traditional paddle game that resembles badminton; and enjoying snacks at the Maid Cafe. Hosted by the Japanese Student Association.

•  Tuesday, April 26, 7:30 to 9 p.m. — Asian Night Market in the Thompson Student Union Ingman Room. Experience an Asian Night Market on campus and learn about different cultural practices and activities from a variety of Asian countries. Hosted by the Office of Multicultural Student Success and the Center for International Studies and Programs.
