President James Holloway helps incoming freshman Nicole Zanko and her dad, Larry Zanko, unload her belongings into a moving cart Thursday morning outside Parks Tower during The University of Toledo’s move-in week.
Zanko, a pharmacy major from Mentor, said both her parents are UToledo graduates, giving her a comfortable familiarity with the campus.
“That was one of the factors for why I came here, but the pharmacy program was six years compared to a lot of other schools that had eight-year programs, and passing rates and job placement out of college were super high here,” she said. “That kind of swayed my decision.”
Teyghyn Roesner, a freshman from Sylvania, gets some help from her dad, Andy Roesner, as she moves personal items into her residence hall. Roesner, a neuroscience major, was one of 405 first-year students who moved into Parks Tower on Thursday.
Freshman Kim Crawford, center, and her parents, Beth and Larry Crawford, were welcomed to UToledo Thursday by Rocky and Rocksy. Crawford, who is from LaPorte, Indiana, said she chose to study pharmacy because it was a way for her to combine her love of chemistry with her passion for pursuing a career in healthcare.
“The campus is really beautiful,” she said. “I’ve been here a few times, everyone is helpful, the pharmacy program is really great and we’re originally from Ohio, so it kind of feels like home.”
Braden Vineyard, left, a UToledo nursing student, loads a TV into a moving cart for first-year psychology student Nathan Stubleski, as his mom, Ashleigh Stubleski — a UToledo graduate and UToledo Health physical therapist — looks on.
Dr. Holloway, right, works with Carlos Hazelwood, a sophomore majoring in criminal justice and defensive tackle on the Rockets football team, to ease a stuffed moving cart toward the ramp at Parks Tower on Thursday. Hazelwood was one of more than 100 student and faculty volunteers who signed up to welcome students to UToledo and help them move into their new on-campus homes.
The University has a number of events planned as part of its Rocket Welcome Weekend celebration over the next several days, including the Residence Life Bonfire on Thursday night, the class of 2029 picnic, new student convocation, CAP Carnival on Friday, and the Flicks on the Field movie screening in the Glass Bowl on Saturday.
The first day of classes for fall semester is Monday, Aug. 25.
