Celebrated jazz artist Kate McGarry will perform as the guest artist for The University of Toledo’s 2024 Jon Hendricks Memorial Jazz Scholarship Concert on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
McGarry will perform a diverse repertoire of jazz standards and her own compositions, accompanied in some instances by the UToledo Jazz Faculty Trio and the UToledo Vocal Jazz Ensemble.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. in the UToledo Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall. General admission tickets are $10 in advance via the Tix.com UToledo website or at the box office before the performance. Student tickets are free with a Rocket ID.

McGarry is a jazz vocalist, composer and educator who has performed on some of the world’s most recognized stages including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Berlin Jazz Fest. During her decade in New York, she served as a Lincoln Center Teaching Artist and a U.S. State Department Jazz Ambassador in the program American Music Abroad, touring Albania, Brazil, Chile, China, Mongolia and Romania.
McGarry has released seven albums and been nominated for Grammy Awards in 2009, 2019 and 2021.

The Jon Hendricks Memorial Jazz Scholarship Concert raises funds to create a music scholarship in his name, supporting future jazz students at UToledo, and we’re excited to welcome a guest artist this year who embodies the spirit of its namesake,” said Dr. Jason Stumbo, chair of the Department of Music. “Kate McGarry is a Grammy-nominated and esteemed jazz artist whose performance shouldn’t be missed.”
Hendricks, one of the originators of the jazz singing technique known as “vocalese,” was a local jazz legend and a faculty member in the UToledo Department of Music before he died in 2017.

The department first hosted a guest artist for this annual concert in his honor in 2018. The Jon Hendricks Memorial Jazz Scholarship Concert raises funds to establish a scholarship in his name to be awarded to students studying jazz at UToledo.
