The University of Toledo Department of Theatre and Film will present “The Diary of Anne Frank,” written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett and adapted by Wendy Kesselman, at the UToledo Center for Performing Arts Center Theatre Nov. 9-19.
Dr. Matt Foss, an associate professor of theatre, directs the production.
Kesselman’s adaptation adds fresh insight to this familiar script, lifting the young protagonist’s voice from the pages of her famous diary and introducing material from contemporary radio broadcasts to help to ground this intimate story in the happenings of the larger world.
Foss, meanwhile, uses a highly theatricalized staging to examine how this part of our shared history speaks to our world today. He connected with stakeholders in Toledo’s Jewish community who enthusiastically served as teachers and advisors on the production.
“We see the need for urgent and necessary engagement with both this history and with what this story has to tell us for this time,” Foss said.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $10 to $20 and available immediately in person at the box office prior to performances or in advance at the UToledo Tix website.
